Highly experienced, Stanford-educated tutor (15+ years) in the Portland metro / Lake Oswego area offering one-on-one tutoring, with a focus on students who are advanced, bored, stuck, or who just learn differently. My wife (PhD in Special Education) and I run Evanstein Creative Learning, combining deep subject expertise with research-based strategies for diverse learners.

Teaching Style

I focus on trying to develop a student's intuition and reasoning. In math, this especially involves connecting the different “worlds” of equations, graphs, and formal definitions. I've found that often these different aspects of math can feel disconnected for students, and it really starts to click when they see how they work together.

I specialize in working with students who:

- are capable but frustrated

- dislike “formula memorization” approaches

- need a deeper conceptual explanation

- have ADHD, autism, or learning differences that make standard instruction ineffective

Format

We offer in-person tutoring in the Lake Oswego/Tualatin area (at our home or at yours), as well as fully virtual sessions via Zoom. I've found that virtual teaching is surprisingly effective for math — a shared whiteboard combined with tools like Desmos makes for a rich, interactive learning environment.
